Last week, I was seriously jonesing to make some new recipes. And since my wife and I love to have “small plates” dinners every so often, I took the opportunity to jazz things up and make all new recipes for the meal, complete with a menu I printed up (because I’m a design geek like that). The menu for the evening included:

  • Raspberry Peach Sangria
  • Cheddar Bacon Ranch Spread
  • Garlic Smashed Potatoes with Sautéed Garlic Tomatoes
  • Grown-up Pigs in a Blanket (filled with BBQ pulled pork and cheese)
  • Zucchini Boats
  • Chocolate Tiramisu Truffles

50 in 15 — A Retrospective

That’s a wrap! My 50 in 15 Challenge is complete — and a whole month early, at that! Since the beginning of the year, I have made 50 new recipes. Some were hugely successful and earned immediate entry into my regular rotation of recipes, while others were decent but didn’t necessarily warrant being made again any time soon. All in all, I’m very pleased with not just being done, but what I learned and accomplished along the way. And as I wrap this up, I thought I’d include a concise list of all 50 recipes here for quick and easy reference.

Pizza All Day!

Last Saturday I decided it was high time to try some new pizzas. So I set out on a quest that, thanks to my sister, was coined #PizzaAllDay. Starting at breakfast and continuing through dinner, I ended up making 4 new pizza creations. It was a lot of time in the kitchen, but anyone who knows me knows how much I absolutely love homemade pizza days, so it was well worth it. And since all of these pizzas were new, they’re qualified for my 50 in 15 Challenge, moving me one step closer to my 50th recipe.

For all of these pizzas, I used the Pizza Americana dough recipe from my go-to pizza book, American Pie: My Search for the Perfect Pizza by Peter Reinhart. It’s a great all-purpose dough recipe that works perfectly for me when making pizzas in my oven.

Vegan Week

So far this month, doing a vegetarian diet for Meat-Free May hasn’t presented too many complications or difficulties, outside of ensuring I don’t accidentally eat something with an often-overlooked ingredient or two that aren’t vegetarian. Well this week, I’m taking my “vegetarian-for-a-month” one step further and going vegan.

Meat-Free May

While I’m presently working on my 50 in 15 Challenge, I decided to give myself another challenge and devote one month of the year to being a Vegetarian — a challenge I’m calling “Meat-Free May”. This challenge isn’t for any specific health or dietary reasons, but rather so I can gain a better understanding of a Vegetarian diet. One big part of this challenge is also to become more aware of hidden and/or otherwise nebulous ingredients that aren’t Vegetarian, like gelatin and rennet.

During my “Meat-Free May” challenge, I’m planning on taking it a step further and going Vegan for a span of one week. I think this will be a much more difficult challenge, thus why I’m only going to do it for a week.

In the end, I think I’ll have a much better understanding and appreciation for both Vegetarian and Vegan diets. And I also have a sneaking suspicion that I’ll be able to add a few Vegetarian/Vegan recipes to my 50 in 15 Challenge.
